Technology: The Bowers & Wilkins AM-1 Architectural Monitor has sound quality as sophisticated as its design. The low-frequency output of its 5in glass-fibre midrange/bass driver is bolstered by the use of a rear-mounted auxiliary bass radiator (ABR). Used instead of a conventional bass reflex port, the ABR endows the B&W AM-1 with exceptional bass response for a cabinet of its size. Unlike a port, it also provides the cabinet of the B&W AM1 with a continual seal against the elements.

The 25mm aluminium dome tweeter of the B&W AM-1 is mounted below rather than above its mid/bass partner. This ensures optimal dispersion of sound when the speaker is mounted high on the wall. This combination of advanced drive units, unique configuration and classically simple crossover components combines to create a loudspeaker as musical as it is flexible. Articulate, exciting and powerful, the B&W AM1 avoids the compromises so commonly associated with versatile, all-weather speakers, and delivers all the performance expected of a Bowers & Wilkins product.

Application: The Bowers & Wilkins AM-1 Architectural Monitor combines a rust-proof aluminium grille with a rigid cabinet composed of glass-filled plastics, ensuring class-leading resistance to extremes of dust, moisture and UV exposure. It has also undergone rigorous, continuous testing in an accelerated salt-spray chamber, and outdoor UV accelerated life tests to ensure that its parts don't fade or discolour.

The B&W AM-1 is designed to be positioned in either landscape or portrait mode for enhanced flexibility when mounting the speaker. Extra flexibility is offered by the ability to be rotated through 110 degrees from centre in two directions. The minimal projection out from a wall and the discreet design adds to the appeal of the B&W AM1. It is considerably less obtrusive than the outgoing WM Series models.

Outdoor placement is initially the most obvious application for the B&W AM-1, as it is the ideal weather-proof option for providing high-quality audio around gardens, patios and swimming pools. Its elegant cast aluminium wall bracket incorporates an ingenious one-plug mounting system. Speaker cables link not to the B&W AM1, but to the bracket itself: this then provides both audio signal connectors and a secure mounting point for the speaker, all housed with a single pivoting socket. Secured with a single Torx key, this unique system allows for rapid installation and simple orientation of the speaker to the desired angle, whether in portrait or landscape format. This also makes for easy servicing.
